Talking to Laurel before bed, she told me she wants to break into the "Girls Gang" at school. Apparently there are three Mexican girls that hang together a lot, and one of the girls has taken a liking to Laurel. The only barrier is that these girls don't really speak English, so Laurel figures she'll have to really learn her Spanish to break into the group.
Laurel's a fast learner, but I have no idea what a reasonable expectation of schoolyard fluency should be given we've been here less than two months. For me, I have to be exposed to a word at least three times before I remember it, but I don't have the advantage of an eight-year-old sponge brain. So anything's possible. It's fun watching the kids learn a new language though. Que sera sera.
